PREPARE
-Come with your presentation memorized and rehearsed. There are a surprising amount of participants who either come unrehearsed, without their piece memorized, or without accompaniment. Its obviously not against the rules, but I can tell you from watching the auditions each year and from judging a fair amount of them as well that it makes a BIG difference if you are prepared.
CHOOSE YOUR PIECE WISELY
-The best way I can describe this is when you're choosing your piece, choose it with the assumption that no one in the audience and/ or the judges panel have no education or experience in the area you are competing in and choose it so that anyone can appreciate it. For example, if you are a dancer I would suggest not necessarily doing something only a dance major would appreciate but something that would entertain. If you are a classical vocalist, something like "The Flower Song" that is melodically beautiful and not necessarily the most technically challenging piece would actually come across better. Stay away from songs that are not within your age genre. For instance, it would be a little uncomfortable to have a 9 year old sing Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's "Like We Never Loved At All." Doesn't mean you can't sing ballads, but there is a big difference between that ballad and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" or Idina Menzel's "Brave."
DRESS APPROPRIATELY
Obviously appropriate clothing is suggested, but along the same lines of preparing for your presentation, it goes a long way with the judges to see the participant care enough to put thought into what they're wearing. Basically if your talent doesn't require a certain costume then I would suggest wearing something more than jeans with holes in them. That doesn't mean that you have to wear a dress or suit, but you can dress up casually. Clean jeans are ok if you make an organized outfit out of it.
As I've always said, I am more than happy to help or assist in any way I can. I want you to do and look your best and I hope that regardless of past years that you participate each year. It is so hard posting the list of who will be performing for final show, because the number is based on time limits and has nothing to do with whether or not you are good enough. There were so many talents I was absolutely sick about not being able to put through. Please come out and participate.
